Getting started with ClearCorrect aligners is an exciting step towards having a straighter, more beautiful smile. But while wearing clear aligners is a lot easier than traditional braces, you still may have some lingering questions about what to expect from your treatment. Here are some common FAQs, and what you need to know about your exciting orthodontic journey!

How Many Hours a Day Should I Wear My Aligners?

While you can remove your ClearCorrect aligners for meals and drinks other than water and for oral health care, you should keep them in place for a minimum of 22 hours a day. This will ensure that your treatment goes smoothly and stays on track, while still allowing you to eat and drink with no dietary restrictions.

Can I Fix My Own Aligner if It’s Poking Me?

Your aligners should not have any sharp edges that cut or poke your cheeks like traditional braces can, however on occasion you may have a small piece that causes irritation. While it may be tempting to take matters into your own hands and “fix” the problem yourself, never attempt to cut or shape your aligner. Instead, contact your dentist as soon as possible and await further instructions.

Can I Smoke with ClearCorrect?

While yes, you can still smoke during ClearCorrect treatment, it is always advisable to quit. Smoking causes myriad oral and overall health problems, and it can stain or discolor your aligners. If you do decide to have a cigarette, remove your aligners to prevent stains, and be sure to brush your teeth before putting them back on.

Is It Normal to Have Loose Teeth with ClearCorrect?

Loose teeth may feel weird, but they are quite typical with any orthodontic treatment, whether it’s with traditional braces or with clear aligners like ClearCorrect. The good news is that this is not only normal, but it is also temporary. Your teeth need to move a bit to get into their new positions, but once you stop redirecting them with your aligners, they will stay in place as long as you wear your retainer as prescribed.

I Lost or Damaged My Aligner. Now What?

If you have lost or damaged your ClearCorrect aligner, don’t panic. Call your dentist at your earliest convenience for the next steps. Often if you are nearing the end of your tray cycle, you can upgrade to a new set ahead of schedule, or if you are at the beginning, you may be able to go back to your old tray temporarily. Thankfully, many dentists allow you a certain amount of free ‘backup’ aligners during your treatment, so if you need to outright replace one it could possibly be covered. Speak to your dentist up front about what your plan includes.

Remember, your ClearCorrect treatment has many benefits over traditional braces. While there are still some important rules to follow with these aligners, they provide many perks that make them easier to wear and care for along your journey. If you have any questions about the treatment process or the aligners themselves, speak to your dentist today!
